Living Poets Society, the BBS in-store poetry bookclub, will be reading and discussing Head Off & Split by Nikky Finney.
About the Book:
The poems in Nikky Finney's breathtaking new collection Head Off & Split sustain a sensitive and intense dialogue with emblematic figures and events in African American life. Finney s poetic voice is defined by an intimacy that holds a soft yet exacting eye on the erotic, on uncanny political and family events. Artful and intense, Finney's poems ask us to be mindful of what we fraction, fragment, cut off, dice, dishonor, or throw away, powerfully evoking both the lawless and the sublime.
The Living Poets Society Bookclub is open to the public and meets at 7pm on the second Tuesday of every month in the Upper North Room of Boulder Book Store. Unless otherwise noted, the author will not be present at the discussion.

Richard Martin will speak about and sign his new book, SuperFuel, on Thursday, May 10th at 7:30pm.
About the book:
At the dawn of the atomic age, uranium and thorium were equally important as the element of choice in researching nuclear energy. Either one could have powered the world’s reactors. But it was uranium that won out, and thorium, which is far cleaner, safer, and more abundant than uranium, was relegated to the dustbin of science. Now, as the world searches for cheap, non-carbon-emitting energy sources, thorium is reemerging as an overlooked solution. Local author Richard Martin’s new book SuperFuel challenges us to look back at what could have been different in history and forward to an energy revolution.

About the book:
Jennifer Wilson, her husband Jim, and their two children had been living in Des Moines, Iowa when they lost half their savings in the stock-market crash and decided to take a family sabbatical in the Croatian mountain village of Mrkopalj, the land of Jennifer's ancestors. In Running Away to Home, Jennifer tells how they lived like locals, milking the neighbor's cows, eating roasted pig on a spit, and desperately seeking the village recipe for bootleg liquor. As the Wilson-Hoff family struggled to stay sane (and warm), what they found was much deeper and bigger than themselves.

About the book:
Pushcart Prize winner and local author Robert Garner McBrearty's stories are inhabited by a range of characters and settings, but what they have in common is an inherent curiosity about the world and how each character can find his own place in it. Jackson Galaxy will speak about and sign his new book, Cat Daddy, on Tuesday, May 22nd at 7:30pm.
About the book:
Cat behaviorist and star of Animal Planet’s hit TV show My Cat from Hell, Jackson Galaxy, a.k.a. “Cat Daddy,” isn’t what you might expect for a cat expert (as The New York Times noted, with his goatee and tattoos he “looks like a Hells Angel”). Yet Galaxy’s ability to connect with even the most troubled felines—not to mention the stressed-out humans living in their wake—is awe-inspiring. In Cat Daddy, Galaxy tells the poignant story of his 13-year relationship with a petite gray-and-white short-haired cat named Benny, and gives advice for living with, caring for, and loving the feline in your home.

Thomas Graham Jr. will speak about and sign his new book, Unending Crisis, on Wednesday, May 23rd at 7:30pm.
About the book:
In Unending Crisis, Thomas Graham Jr. examines the Bush administration's misguided management of foreign policy, the legacy of which has been seven major—and almost irresolvable—national security crises involving North Korea, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, the Arab-Israeli conflict in Palestine, and nuclear proliferation. Graham considers these issues individually and together, emphasizing their interrelationship and delineating the role that the neoconservative agenda played in redefining the way America is perceived in the world today.

Mark Fiege will speak about and sign his new book, The Republic of Nature, on Thursday, May 24th at 7:30pm.
About the book:
In the dramatic narratives that comprise The Republic of Nature, Mark Fiege reframes the canonical account of American history based on the simple but radical premise that nothing in the nation's past can be considered apart from the natural circumstances in which it occurred. Revisiting familiar historical icons, he makes surprising connections that enable readers to see old stories in a new light. The Republic of Nature points to a startlingly different version of history that calls on readers to reconnect with fundamental forces that shaped the American experience.

Alan Gilbert will speak about and sign his new book, Black Patriots & Loyalists: Fighting for Emancipation in the War for Independence, on Thursday, May 31st at 7:30pm.
About the book:
We commonly think of the American Revolution as simply the war for independence from British colonial rule. But that independence applied to only a portion of the American population—African Americans would still be bound in slavery for nearly another century. In Black Patriots and Loyalists, University of Denver professor Alan Gilbert asks us to rethink what we know about the Revolutionary War. There were actually two wars being waged at once: a political revolution for independence from Britain and a social revolution for emancipation and equality.

It’s time to get involved—and have your voice heard! The election to decide who sits on the next County Commission for Boulder County is rapidly approaching. Come learn more about this critical election by meeting candidate Elise Jones at the Boulder Book Store on Saturday, June 2, from 1-3pm.
Your vote is crucial because County Commissioners play a powerful role in ensuring the quality of life here in Boulder County. The three Commissioners:
· Oversee the County’s $320 million budget and nine departments (Land Use, Parks & Open Space, Transportation, Administrative Services, Housing & Human Services, Community Services, Budget, County Attorney and Commissioners’ Office).
· Manage the social services safety net that provides assistance to those in need.
· Decide what open space to buy and how it’s managed.
· Make land use and development policy and decisions in unincorporated Boulder County.
Current County Commissioner Will Toor is termed out this year, and the election to fill his seat will be decided in the Democratic primary on June 26 (there are no Republicans in the race). This will be an all-mail ballot primary—ballots will arrive around June 6. To vote in the primary, you must be registered to vote by May 29. (If you’re registered but not as a Democrat, May 25 is the last day to affiliate or change your party affiliation to vote in the primary -- you can change it back afterwards if you like.)
County Commissioner Candidate Elise Jones will be at the Boulder Book Store from 1-3pm on Saturday, June 2nd, to answer your questions about what a County Commissioner does, and talk about key issues in the County and how she would address them. You can learn more about Elise and her experience at www.elisejones.org.

About the book:
You don’t need to be a genius, you just need to be yourself. That’s the message from Austin Kleon, a young writer and artist who knows that creativity is everywhere, creativity is for everyone. When Mr. Kleon was asked to address college students in upstate New York, he shaped his speech around the ten things he wished someone had told him when he was starting out. The talk went viral, and its author dug deeper into his own ideas to create Steal Like an Artist, the book. A manifesto for the digital age, Steal Like an Artist is a guide that will put readers directly in touch with their artistic side.
